An opt-in email list is better than cash in the bank. There are many online entrepreneurs who make a very good income from an opt-in email list of just 5,000 names.

You will need to really understand your audience and figure out something they want badly enough to give you their email address and allow for regular emails to be the sent to them.

It could simply be an update every time there is some new content at your site. Even this can work.

I would recommend that you set up your opt-in email list at yahoo groups. Very efficient management of your list. And your clients will be sure that their email addresses will not be sold to anybody else. And all for free. You will need to set up your opt-in list as a newsletter only and not an open discussion forum which yahoogroups can also do rather well.
